As this cartoon implies, Iowa Representative Steven Arnold King appears to have a bigoted streak. The last thing we want to do is disparage Mr. King's character, but he DID once equate Mexicans to cattle, and he DID recently imply that Senator Barack Obama would be unfit for president of the United States simply due to his parentage and his middle name.
The problem is that we're not sure if Mr. King is a bigot himself, or if he's simply fear-mongering in order to win his next term in office. We DO know that Mr. King's attitudes do NOT represent the average Iowan.
In this clip, you can see Mr. King discuss the possible "optics" of an Obama presidency
during a radio interview in Iowa on March
7th, 2008.
Juan Cole of the Global Americana Institute
wrote an excellent article wherein he states,
"In short, King is not just a garden variety conservative. He is something close to being
a white supremacist."
Talking Points Memo said Mr. King "pulls out
all the stops, a trifecta of racist smears against Obama..."
